Gas Prices Killing You- Try Hypermiling- Techniques to Increase Your MPG!
Let's not beat the horse anymore. Gas prices are high, and filling up at the pumps is a necessity for the masses. Familes are doing away with discretionary income purchases, because if you drive to work- you need gas- and the last time I looked, the boss wasn't giving me a weekly gas car.
A new technique which my daughter spoke to me about is hypermiling. That is someone who changes their behavior when driving for better gas mileage. It was coined by a Chicagoan- Wayne Gerdes. It's having a focus on how you are driving. For example, if you are coming to a red light, take your foot off the gas, and coast to a stop; If you are going downhill, don't keep your foot on the gas; Try to go the speed limit so you can make timed lights; keep your tires inflated properly, avoid left turns and so on.
I did find a couple articles quoting AAA that hypermiling is dangerous, when you drive the speed limit in areas where traffic is impeded. The world will be hearing more about Hypermiling in the weeks to come, and I wouldn't be surprised if a Dummies Guide to Hypermiling isn't in the works...
