When Laura Bush asked all members of Congress to pick artists to decorate ornaments for the White House Christmas tree, Jim McDermott (D- WA) picked liberal artist Deborah Lawrence. Lawrence designed a red swirling ornament, with text between the swirls thanking McDermott for supporting the resolution to impeach George Bush. Initially the First Lady's staff said, they had no plans to NOT hang the ornament, but in an updated post - Sally McDonough, a spokeswoman for the first lady, confirmed the ornament would not be
displayed. "It's inappropriate and it's not being hung," she said. She
said that when asked about the issue yesterday, the White House tree
decorations were not complete. "We reviewed the ornament along with all
the [other] ornaments, and Mrs. Bush deemed it inappropriate for the
holiday tree. Artist Lawrence was still slated to attend the White House reception for artists this afternoon. (photo from Washington Post/Courtesy of Deborah Lawrence)
