Before I ever heard or managed Al Yankovic, I would listen to Dr. Demento a/k/a Barry Hansen on KMET in Los Angeles. His love of novelty songs, coupled with his unique personality was great play for radio. So during my tenure handling Weird Al, I had the pleasure of working with Dr D. and he was exactly like he came off on the radio. His home in the suburbs had a living filled with LP's, and after Al and I parted ways, the Doc wanted to give me back some albums I lent him- nice guy. Over the years, the number of stations Dr. Demento's syndicated show as on dwindled, and sadly, tonite June 13, 2010 will be the last time one will him introduce "Fish Heads" or "They're coming to take me away" or "Another One Rides the Bus". Dr. Demento was a cultural hero for hundreds of thousands who loved novelty records, and wanted to be different. I for one thank him- and will miss him. His website reports, that his program will now be available on the net- so really all is not lost...:)
