Two weeks after suffering a heart attack Sharon Fogaren Santos has died. She was half of the (WFHN) New Bedford) FUN 107 morning team of JR and Sharon. Condolences to her Family, Friends and Fans.
KFWB was one of the mainstay Top 40 stations here in Hollywood/Los Angeles before it went all news. Just recently, the station altered its format to include Hollywood/Entertainment industry news, but I guess it didn't work for the CBS station. Starting in September the station is going News/Talk with the mainstay being the Dr. Laura show moving from KFI to KFWB in the same time slot. In her place, KFI is adding another 2 hour Bill Hadel show from Noon-2. These moves ought shake up the Los Angeles Talk radio market for a few months...
I grew up listening to Paul Harvey on the radio. Be it his 15 minute broadcasts of off beat news and commentary, I loved how he would intersperse the stories with Page 1, Page 2, and when Paul Harvey sold a product, he sold a product. Just ask long time sponsor Bose.....
Harvey also had a unique radio feature, "...the rest of the story" where he would talk about someone, or something- building up to the climax....and now you know....the rest of the story".
Ralph Story, George Putnam, and now Paul Harvey. Legends in Broadcasting who had that style that is sadly extinct today.
Blog Update- 3/7/09 Fullerton Rally for Tax Revolt
A lot of hits on John and Ken lately, probably because they are leading the way of a citizen tax revolt after the California legislature passed an outrageous budget. In fact the KFI 640 duo has declared an all out war. You may recall that John and Ken were the first hosts to side with newly released border agents Compean and Ramos. If I were to compare John and Ken with any character- it would be Howard Beale from Network
Sanyo will be introducing a $150 set-top radio that will pick up Internet Stations, as well as FM stations without connecting to a PC, or using a hardwired broadband connection. When I am up at CES the week, I will try and get by the Sanyo booth to take a look at this- but this new product will change the face of the radio industry. It's only a matter of time before the major car dealers use the same technology for new autos.
Even though the R277 will use existing wireless connections- I believe it will only be a matter of time before the technology becomes common place. Where does that leave the Sirius/XM?
Harry Shearer began Le Show in 1983, and for the past 1300 Sunday's the syndicated radio show has been part of the NPR lineup. Most of you regular readers know that I listen to the show on a podcast during my 2.6 mile walk each Sunday afternoon. The satirical humor and insight into the world today keeps me smiling as I walk up the hills of the San Fernanado Valley.
Bill Drake passed away from lung cancer Saturday Nov 29, according to Radio & Records. Most people don't know who Bill Drake is, but if you listened to radio from the 1960's on, you will know the Top 40 Hits format, Bill Drake created at the helm of Drake/Chenault.
Radio & Records - there is no story link- it is under the news area.
Update 12/18: Susan Mikula is having an art show tomorrow in NYC - Gothamist
Until I read the new issue of Newsweek, I hadn't heard of Susan Mikula. But now that Rachel Maddow has been thrust to Cable News Stardom, so-to-speak, the world is going to want to learn a little bit more about Rachel's longtime partner. It seems they met when Mikula was looking for a yard boy to clean up her yard, and according to the Newsweek article, when Maddow came to the door Maddow fell for her instantly. Mikula is an accountant by trade but also an aspiring artist. Below are some links that will give you more insight into Mikula. (Pic is Maddow with Mikula)
The air must be real thin in Waukegan...cause when I saw the rape victim was only asking $50,000 from WXLC's parent company Next Media, I was perplexed. How come so little. This is a case that will generate regional, if not national headlines.
The Back Story: Jane Doe entered a "Win a Date with Travis" sponsored by WXLC. The Chicago Tribune reports: Travis Harvey of Gurnee was a "great guy" and "kind." But as a busy single father, Harvey couldn't find the time to meet the right woman.
What WXLC didn't know was that Garvey had a previous record of abuse of a woman, and the station didn't vet him as they should of- as they promoted him as a nice guy.
I don't need to write the details of the date, except Jane Doe had one drink, passed out and was raped. $50,000 to make this go away? Next Media should pay up....
