Having grown up in the 50's with the era of TV variety shows. Rosie O' Donnell is no Ed Sullivan, no matter how the NBC press department spins it. Granted Rosie is a talented personality, but from the opening monologue - where she alienated those folks that didn't vote for Barack Obama, to her NY Theater production with Liza Minelli- I cringed. What demographics is NBC trying to reach? A Comedy bit with Alec Baldwin that had Conan O'Brien get a pie in the face- Shades of Soupy Sales? The only thing I got out of this bit was how tall O'Brien was. Then a cute bit with some kids tap dancing...I couldn't watch anymore. If NBC is trying to reach a younger demographic- this isn't the show. I don't know who this show was created for? Rosie Live! was a disappointment.
So after writing the above paragraph I googled Rosie Live Reviews....and came across this one from the Los Angeles Times...Rosie, Rosie, what on earth were you thinking? Were you thinking camp? Were you thinking this will be big and brassy and so-over-the-top even the dancing cupcakes will be irresistible? For those of us who are, and remain, Rosie fans, who think “The View” will never quite recover from her departure, who think her desire to resurrect variety show was, and is, a great idea, disappointment does not even begin to describe it. For weeks now NBC has seduced and tantalized with the promise of a cross between Carol Burnett and “Sonny and Cher.” And this is what we get? Rosie in a glitter top having Baldwin speak into her cleavage and making jokes about her weight? Someone get a hold of Tim Conaway, stat.
Update: Hollywood Reporter saying Rosie Live! tied for the lowest rated program of the evening
So far the comments are extreme on a negative side....
The only positive review I have seen is Roger Friedman from Fox News.
